Major (Retired) NJ Hall MVOÂ
Regimental Adjutant, Irish Guards
As we begin to emerge from the dark tunnel of the Covid-19 Pandemic, focus inevitably shifts across the Household Division towards a hopeful return to the centre stage of State Ceremonial and Public Duties. Not least amongst us is the Regimental Band of the Irish Guards and their own return to ‘match fitness’ after some months away.
It would be remiss not to recognise the service and hard work not only of the Regimental Band, but also the many other Irish Guardsmen who have supported Covid-19 Mobile Testing Units across the South of England over this time. This has not been an easy task for anyone involved - but as ever it was delivered with total professionalism, great adaptability and enduring good humour by all involved.
Looking to the future and a return to their ‘real’ trade in the pursuit of musical excellence, the Regimental Band has eagerly grasped the opportunity to complete this new recording. It acts both as a performance focus and driver in the refreshing of musical skills dulled by operational deployment, and also a means of reinforcing a relevance and connection with the Irish Guards’ Regimental family and the Band’s audiences more widely.Â
I am therefore delighted to recommend this collection of stirring melodies from the Emerald Isle – many of which were performed in the Guards Chapel just before St Patrick’s Day 2020. Little did we realise at that time that these would be the last notes we would hear from the Band for the next six months as we entered lockdown. It’s wonderful to hear them back.
